Sample video from the Macarthur Country Music Awards 2010.
Sandra has come back to music after a
break of around 35 years. Raising 2 kids and helping with 7 grandkids,
as well as a full time job with the government, had taken up most of her
time.
Following the death of her husband, she began to travel and discover a
new life then met up with some people in the country music world in the
Campbelltown area.
After procrastinating for a little while, and a lot of persuasion from
her friends, she eventually went along to see what the Macarthur Country
Music Club was all about. She was hooked. From the first meeting and
finding herself back on the stage after such a long time, albeit a very,
very nervous person, she found that a lot of the songs that she knew as
a teenager growing up in the 50s & 60s were now being sung in the
country music genre. When Camden Valley Country Music Club was formed 3
years ago, she was invited along to check it out, and decided to join
that club as well.
In the time she has been a member of both
clubs, and with a good sense of rhythm, she has developed as a
percussionist, at times driving everyone crazy with her tambourine, but
also helping out when a beat is needed and a drummer is unavailable. She
has also taught herself to play guitar to a level that she can now
accompany some of the people on the stage. She says that one day she
will learn to play the "funny" chords that escape her at the moment.
Now the proud owner of a Magenta coloured
Martiniz guitar as well as her prized Samick, Greg Bennett signature 12
string guitar, she is still looking to find that "just right"
instrument. Sandra has also tried her hand at song writing, producing
her first song "Lonely Cloud" which she entered in the inaugural
Macarthur Country Music awards 3 years ago. Her later song "Mr Right", a
bouncy, fun song was written after returning from an ocean cruise where
she met someone, but forgot to get his phone number. It had a happy
ending though, because she had given him her card. That song was entered
in the awards last year. Not one to give up, she has now written a
ballad called "Standing in the Doorway Looking In" which was entered in
the awards competition this year. She is now working to have this song
recorded, along with Mr Right and several cover songs. There are a
couple more songs in the making, but time will tell what happens to
them.
Performances have included, Fishers Ghost
Fesitval, Campbelltown Agricultural Show, Picton show, Australia Day at
Camden, Car Shows at Camden & Moorebank, plus several performances in
the passenger talent shows aboard Fair Princess, Pacific Sky & Pacific
Sun. Even though Sandra has been through a couple of rough spots,
she has never lost her energy, sense of humour or love of fun, which
she carries on to the stage and into her performances.
